7th International Symposium - ACEPS-2019

7th International Symposium on Advances in Civil and Environmental Engineering Practices for Sustainable Development (ACEPS-2019), was successfully held on 17th October 2019 at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Ruhuna, Galle. ACEPS -2019 created a platform to discuss advanced sustainable engineering practices that are adopted in developing the region.  ACEPS-2019 was jointly organized by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Ruhuna and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Saitama University, Japan.  This time, ACEPS was sponsored by Siam City Cement (Lanka) Pvt Limited, Ceylon Steel Corporation Pvt Limited and Saitama University, Japan.  ACEPS-2019 consisted of forty-four research papers presented in nine technical sessions, three keynote papers presented in plenary sessions and six abstracts of industry research and case studies.

   


 

External reviewer visit, Dr. Antony P. Darby - 2019

The visit of Dr. Antony P. Darby, Head of Civil Engineering Group, University of Bath, Bath, Somerset, United Kingdom, was from 21st to 26th February, 2019 for a period of six days, where he spent time in the department according to a pre-scheduled programme, having discussions with the Dean, academic and non-academic staff, undergraduate students, alumni, Industrial Consultative Committee members of the department, postgraduate students and, reviewing the facilities available for students and staff. At the end of the visit, he submitted a comprehensive report giving commendations and recommendations for improvement. This report helped the department to take many steps to improve the academic programme.


 

Undergraduate Research Symposium - 2019

The 8th Undergraduate Research Symposium on ‘Recent Advances in Civil Engineering' jointly organized by the Civil and Environmental Engineering Society and Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Ruhuna, was successfully held on 7th of February 2019, at the faculty premises, Hapugala, Galle.

They symposium showcased undergraduate creativities, achievements and researches from all areas of study at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Ruhuna.

This year, this symposium attracted more participants from Engineering Faculties of University of Ruhuna, University of Peradeniya, University of Moratuwa, University of Jaffna, South Eastern University and Sri Lanka Institute of Technology.

    


 

4th Intack M.Eng Programme.

Interview for 4th Intack M.Eng Programme was held on 5th  February at the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Ruhuna, Hapugala, Galle. Forty-Three (43)  candidates were called for this interview of M.Eng programme under 3 specialized areas  ;

President’s Awards for Scientific Publication

Dr. Tushara Chaminda of Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering received the President’s Awards for Scientific Publication for his research publications on year 2016.This year, President’s Awards for Scientific Publication was held on 19th November 2018 at the Taj Samudra Hotel, Colombo. Sri Lankan scientists with a Sri Lankan institutional affiliation received awards for their research published in 2016. The ceremony was graced by His Excellency Maithripala Sirisena the President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. The President’s Awards for Scientific Publication gives due recognition for scientific merit and is based on publications.   


 

Spaghetti Bridge competition 2018

National Spaghetti Bridge competition 2018, organized by IESL YMS and CES of University of Peradeniya  took place on the second day of TECHNO 2018, held at BMICH premises. University level winners from Moratuwa, Peradeniya, Ruhuna and south eastern university engineering faculties went head to head for the glory of being the national champions of the competition. The competition became intense when loading of prepared bridges started.  At the end, group “Spartanz” from University of Ruhuna became the runner-up.

The 5th International Symposium on, Advances in Civil and Environmental Engineering Practices, for Sustainable Development (ACEPS-2017), was held on 16rd March 2017 at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Ruhuna, Galle. The symposium created a venue to discuss advanced sustainable engineering practices that are adopted in developing the region. The symposium was mainly centered on Civil Engineering Practices for Sustainable Development, Ecological engineering of water bodies, Infrastructure planning and development, and Environmental Engineering. ACEPS-2017 was jointly organized by, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Ruhuna and the Department of Civil, Environmental Engineering, Saitama University and Toyama Prefectural University japan. Undergraduate Research Symposium - 2017

The Sixth Undergraduate Research Symposium on ‘Recent Advances in Civil Engineering' jointly organized by the Civil and Environmental Engineering Society and Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Ruhuna, successfully held on January 6, 2017 at the faculty premises, Hapugala, Galle.

They symposium showcases undergraduate creativity, achievement and research from all areas of study at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Ruhuna.

This year this symposium attracted more than hundred and fifty participants from Engineering Faculties of University of Ruhuna, University of Peradeniya, University of Moratuwa, University of Jaffna, South Eastern University and Sri Lanka Institute of Technology.

Seventy nine research projects conducted by the final year civil engineering students in the academic year 2016/2017 of faculty of engineering, University of Ruhuna presented at the this year symposium. This year the symposium was graced by Prof. Rupa Purasinghe from California State University, USA as the Key Note Speaker. Dr. A.M.N. Alagiyawanna, Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Ruhuna, Dr. Chandana Perera, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Dr. H.H.J. Keerthisena, the founding Dean of the Faculty and many senior academic staff members and engineers from the industry participated the symposium. 


Full Accreditation

B.Sc Engineering Degree Program conducted by Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (DCEE), University of Ruhuna, was granted unconditional “Full Accreditation” for next 5 years till year 2020 by IESL under the “Washington Accord” which is an International Accreditation agreement for professional engineering academic degrees. Accordingly, graduates of DCEE are well recognized by the other signatory countries (Australia, Canada, Taiwan, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Turkey, United Kingdom and the United States) as having met the academic requirements for entry to the practice of Civil Engineering.
